In our continuing coverage of Oscar-nominated films, guest reviewer entertainmenttakeover_ has a look at One Night in Miami, nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Song, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
One Night in Miami is a fictional account of one incredible night where icons Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown gathered, discussing their roles in the civil rights movement and cultural upheaval of the 60s.
Don’t tell Denzel Washington and Will Smith I said this, but their portrayals of Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali can now pass the baton to Kingsley Ben-Adir and Eli Goree, respectfully of course.
Regina King kills it in her directorial debut, backed by a wonderful script courtesy of Kemp Powers and an absolutely on fire cast. Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge, and Leslie Odom Jr. all give fantastic performances! The production design, costumes, and score were beautiful. Although you can tell this originated in the theatre, I think the film found a strong balance, with enough variety in the settings that it didn’t become stagnant.
It is hard to choose the film’s MVP, but for me it was Leslie Odom. He LIVED in his portrayal of Sam Cooke. And if I’m being honest, it was the Sam Cooke and Malcolm X show. My recommendation is to watch, learn and listen to four of the most influential figures in history find their positions in the movement and much more than that. Oh, and the final scene is the chef’s kiss. I REALLY enjoyed this one!
