Review – Nightmare Alley

Guest reviewer The Cult Factor has a look at Nightmare Alley, nominated for four Oscars!

Nightmare Alley is twisted, stylish and dark period piece which sees director Guillermo Del Toro at the peak of his powers.

Mini-Synopsis: Nightmare Alley tells the story of Stanton Carlisle, a carnie who rises from the depths of poverty to extort clients for his soothsaying services, only for his sins to stab him in the back as he falls from grace into turmoil.

A highlight of this movie lies in Bradley Cooper’s leading performance. His role as the troubled Stanton Carlisle showcased his acting range and, for me, is deserved of critical acclaim.

This movie emphasises themes of vice through the seven deadly sins. Carlisle stresses that he ‘never’ indulges in alcohol, an intriguing character detail which is eventually subverted as his character arc develops. Notably, the film holds a sordid atmosphere with many suggestive scenes and tones which test Carlisle’s character. The violence and gore is another major aspect of the story and epitomises the gritty and dark reality Toro attempts to convey.

Carlisle undergoes an incredible character arc which the film depicts beautifully through the writing, directing and make-up as he oscillates between clean-shaven and disheveled appearances. His development is hinged upon his tragic flaw(s) including greed, envy and pride. He is a product of poverty and trauma which motivate and maim him during the course of the story.

Structurally, the third act was the most superb and riveting, there is an increased pace and tension as events go awry and misadventure is punished. This section of the movie is probably my favourite due to its fast paced, thrilling sequences as Carlisle’s fate is sealed.

Ultimately, Del Toro has produced one hell of a movie which delivers in all of the right places. Nightmare Alley is a dark, tragic tale detailing the fall of man. It will entertain you every step of the way with a few twists and moments of horror that delight and disgust in equal measure.

Rating: 9/10
