Review – The Matrix Resurrections

This week guest writer Shalee has a look at The Matrix Resurrections, which is on the Oscars shorlist for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects.

I finally went to see The Matrix Resurrections over the weekend and I absolutely loved it!

I will start by saying, this is NOT as good as the original. Nothing can be. The Matrix is one of the best movies of all time and I could rant about it all day so don’t get me started.

But like so many others, I fell in love with the story about the rise of robots, the war between robots and humans, and about love (nawww). Yes, I have watched The Animatrix and yes, I have read every fan theory there is. So, for those who are deep into The Matrix storyline, the second, third, and now the fourth installments are like the cherry on the cake!

And for something that has come 22 years after the original, they have done well. Tonally the movie knows exactly what it is right from the start and it KNOWS it is not the 1996 version and doesn’t try to be. Yes, the film is filled to the brim with nods from the original trilogy but it acknowledges that things are different now.

The Matrix itself is different, the side characters are different, and even Neo and Trinity are different. It doesn’t try to pretend that 22 years hasn’t gone by but rather leans into it and even pokes fun at the reboot. The movie is also very meta (sorry to use that word) and is sending a strong message that current society is very similar to The Matrix.

I do wish things were just a little more polished. The fight scenes were just not as good and the editing was just slightly off in some parts. But there was one scene where I had goosebumps it was so crazy. I also wanted a little more from Trinity and Neo, they are both wonderful actors and I think they could have given us a more depth about what they were going through.

I was invested the whole way through and at no point was I bored but it was a little hard to follow and a lot of the time I had no idea what was going on. But I love then looking up breakdowns of the film afterwards to see what I had missed. I don’t think this film will be for everyone but I am going to go back to the cinema and watch it again haha!

8/10 for me!! For all my other film posts, check out the hashtag #ttctakeonfilm.
