It’s time yet again to Social Distance the heck out of this epidemic and watch a movie together while still staying in three different states: North Carolina, Florida, and California. Next up for the Tri-State Watch Party, we went with Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
The Netflix Watch Party app ended up being a little complicated, so we just set a time to hit “play” and then chatted through instant messenger. Click the jump to read some highlights from the conversation.
The Players: Elizabeth, Hannah, Kathryn, Nathan, and the parents (Parents represented here by Marian, because Dad would chisel a message in a stone tablet before typing anything on a phone.)
(Kathryn says something in a different IM thread)
Elizabeth
Is this the thread we use for the chat?
Nathan
I think so!
Kathryn
Yep!
Elizabeth
HEY KATHRYN THIS THREAD
Kathryn
I’M HERE ALREADY, god..
Elizabeth
Hee
Hannah
Haha
All set here
Elizabeth
Ready when yall are
Kathryn
Playing
Elizabeth
Playing!
Hannah
Nathan
Contains tobacco depictions! Oh no!!
Elizabeth
hahaha
Kathryn
Watched this for the first time at a slumber party after watching my first slasher flick (Nightmare on Elm Street 2)
Hannah
Forgot this is how it opens
So looking forward to the reveal…
Nathan
Ugh. Not a good intro to slasher films!
Elizabeth
I was blown away by the animation quality just in the 2 D stuff
And I LOVE THAT ONE
It wasn’t 2, I think it was Dream Warriors?
Nathan
That one’s marginally better.
This room has more dimensions than an MC Escher painting.
Elizabeth
The little bird wandering away
Kathryn
Just love the joyus madcap hilarity
Elizabeth
Love ALL of that
Hannah
I spent most of my early life not knowing Bob Hoskins was British
Elizabeth
Same!
Nathan
Me, too.
Hannah
Getting the shadows right on the toons is a fucking feat
Nathan
Took forever, too, from what I recall.
Elizabeth
First recognizable cartoon character yay Dumbo!
Hannah
How fast would you like your world built? This movie builds the world in less than 8 minutes
Elizabeth
Seriously!
Kathryn
Both the ostrich and the Hippo are from Fantasia
Hannah
It’s so good
And the brooms
Haha “who needs a car in LA?”
Elizabeth
Hee
Hannah
Also this music is doing some WORK setting the scene/mood
Elizabeth
Interesting that they had two disabled characters in one scene, very inclusive.
What kinda camera is that Nathan?
Ugh this guy
Hannah
What is that CHALICE
Elizabeth
hahaha
Nathan
An old Kodak folding camera. An Autograph, I think.
Hannah
This reminds me that this is also the movie where I learned about Harvey
Elizabeth
I was delighted at a cartoon saying “ass.”
Kathryn
I remember it being a HUGE deal when they announced they were gonna be able to use Disney AND Looney Toon characters.
Hannah
Yesss
Elizabeth
“can anyone understand what this duck is saying?”
Kathryn
AND I MEAN ICE
Hannah
“AND I MEAN ICE ”
Hee
Elizabeth
Jinx!
And I love that whole bit
Nathan
That’s the original voice actor for Betty Boop.
Elizabeth
No way!
Nathan
This was also the last thing Mel Blanc did before he passed.
Hannah
Oh wow
Kathryn
And an entire generation of fan art was born with this scene
Hannah
That is… not Kathleen Turner singing
Elizabeth
No I don’t think so
Nathan
Was just going to check that.
Elizabeth
I saw a Making Of video on this scene, not just the integration of cartoon with real life, but the layers and layers of effects in that dress.
Nathan
Vocal is by Amy Irving.
The same Amy Irving that was once married to Steven Spielberg.
Had no idea she could sing!
Hannah
Oh I remember seeing a documentary about all the mechanical things that were used to make the real-world items move on their own
Elizabeth
Groundbreaking
Hannah
“Good comeback” Eddie
Elizabeth
Heh
Hannah
THIS ALWAYS MADE ME SO UNCOMFORTABLE
Elizabeth
hahahah
I love Roger’s vocals in this whole scene
Hannah
The sound when it hits the trash can haha
Elizabeth
Yes!
Kathryn
The amount of practical effects needed to just MOVE things the toons are touching is mind boggling.
Elizabeth
NOT THE BOOZE
Such a nice way to set that up, that the photos were on the same camera his girlfriend loaned him.
Kathryn
And this camera pan, very nice wordless exposition
Elizabeth
Never heard the term “cacked im” before or since
Remind me to send you the supercut of Yosemite Sam swearing
Hannah
Chekhov’s animated gags
Elizabeth
Yes!
The goosestepping boots always crack me up
Kathryn
Definitely my favorite
Elizabeth
There he is!
Hannah
Little bit of Dr. Strangelove, haha
Elizabeth
Agreed!
Hannah
Das one dead tune, eh boss?
Kathryn
I always appreciated the fact that the police officer was empathic enough to have to look away.
Elizabeth
You got the IQ of a rattle!
Hannah
Omg he’s Bulldog
Elizabeth
The personality or the actor?
Hannah
Heh just the personality
Elizabeth
Hee
Hannah
Such a clever shot (pun intended)
Elizabeth
Yes!
Kathryn
Yes, they set things up so organically in this movie.
Elizabeth
But the liquor store guy, he knew…
Hannah
Hee
Elizabeth
The fingerprints in the dust.
Hannah
The fingerprints
Elizabeth
Jinx!
Hannah
Stoop
Kathryn
“He looks like a sensitive and SOBER fellow.”
Elizabeth
He does such a fantastic job of making you BELIEVE he’s talking to a toon
Hannah
THAT’S PROSTATE, YOU IDIOT, NOT PROBATE
Elizabeth
hahaha
Is it just me or is the cut to that scene a little odd?
Nathan
A bit.
Hannah
That was weird
Elizabeth
Always figured they lost a big scene in there
Hannah
There it is
Elizabeth
“Painted hussy.” Nice
Hannah
This might be a dumb question, but do they still have streetcars in Hollywood?
Nathan
Don’t know.
Elizabeth
Not that I’ve seen, trolleys though
Nathan
Roger on his soapbox.
Elizabeth
Never caught that
First time I ever heard the word “reprobates”
Hannah
Same composer as the Avengers movie
Elizabeth
I love that gag!
Really??
Kathryn
The comic book logic is superb
Hannah
Oh Roger, not the booze
Elizabeth
Love how the judge was dancing back from the dip too
One of my favorite characters coming up!
Outta my way pencilneck!
Kathryn
Yay! This car has the best expressions
Hannah
NOW THEY’RE RIGHT IN FRONT OF US
Elizabeth
“whadda ya call the middle of a song” “I don’t know A BRIDGE!!!”
Kathryn
Such pathos in this scene
Hannah
THE STRINGS OF EXPOSITION
Elizabeth
Hee
Nathan
Kathryn
I wanna see the movie “Pistol Packing Possun” that’s on the poster in the office.
Hannah
I would watch the hell out of Pistol Packin Possum
GET OUTTA MY HEAD
Elizabeth
Jinx!
Kathryn
Elizabeth
Yay toon town!
I love how completely sinister they make it
Nathan
The inscription on the gun box is from Yosemite Sam.
Elizabeth
I never noticed that!
Kathryn
I just wanna drink this next bit in.
Elizabeth
Mickey and Bugs in the same scene, everybody lost their mind about that
Kathryn
Was that a porky pig ad for beef sausages?
Nathan
Wouldn’t surprise me.
Hannah
#richbeefsausages
Elizabeth
A better lover than a driver? You better believe it buster.
Kathryn
Booby trap, har
Elizabeth
Little bit of Doc Brown for a sec there
“Traffic jams will be a thing of the past.” Ho ho ho
Hannah
Traffic jams will be a thing
Stop it
Elizabeth
jinx!
Hannah
Haha
Kathryn
Believe it or not, putting the streetcars out of business to make a freeway feasible is historically accurate.
Hannah
As far as the eye can see is a Doc Brown line isn’t it?
Elizabeth
Oo, maybe?
Hannah
I totally believe it
I FORGOT ABOUT THIS SONG
Kathryn
Who knew Bob had it in him to do a scene like this.
Hannah
This came out the same time as Beetlejuice
Elizabeth
That totally makes sense
Love how there’s actually a strict cartoon logic to EVERYTHING
Kathryn
This next bit with the eyes FREAKED ME OUT.
Elizabeth
BUT I LOVED IT
Gotta be up there in the top bad guy deaths
Hannah
This is SO DARK
Elizabeth
Right? Sinister as hell!
Man I love that cab
Hannah
Self-governance!
Kathryn
And Capitalism was defeated forever!
Elizabeth
hahah
Nathan
Hannah
And Toon Liberia was founded
Elizabeth
Hee
So fun, really holds up after all this time
Kathryn
Boy, doesn’t it just?
Hannah
Great Disney/Warner send-off there
Elizabeth
OH MY GOD
Kathryn
I’m intrigued and also terrified.
Elizabeth
Right??
Hannah
Noooo I’m terrified
Elizabeth
Also, 90 seconds of Yosemite Sam swearing.
Hannah
Omg it’s that parrot
Kathryn
