Movie Issues: Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection

Friday the 13th is one of the longest running horror franchises to date. It mainly focused on a boy who, due to negligence of the camp staff, drowns at Camp Crystal Lake. Decades later, the lake is rumored to have a “death curse” and becomes the setting for a series of mass murders. Jason Voorhess is featured in all the films, as the killer or the motivation for the killings themselves.

The very first film was created to cash in on the major success from John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978). Seeing a hole to be filled with another horror slasher film, Paramount Pictures went ahead and made the first Friday the 13th film, which came out in the summer of 1980, thus starting a trend we still see today.

friday-the-13th-part-vii-the-new-blood-deluxe-edition-20090914032300319Jason, with his unforgettable hockey mask, has gone on a murdering rampage through twelve movies that begin in 1980 and the latest in 2009. From killing in the camp, to New York City, and even space, nothing has been able to stop this force of evil. With his own style of killing and his signature theme, Jason has gone on to become one of the most popular horror film icons ever. Even going so far as to go up against his horror film rival Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street series in Freddy vs. Jason in 2003.

Although most critics hate the films, the series is still considered a great success, not only for the amount of movies they have made, but because the fans just won’t let it die.
