[E3 2014] Rainbow Six: Siege rises from the ashes of Patriots, and Shines

The biggest surprise of Ubisoft’s E3 2014 Press Conference was, without a doubt, the announcement of Rainbow Six: SiegeRainbow Six has been in holding pattern ever since bad timing and sensitive subject matter froze the title in an interminable holding pattern. But good news, fans of tactical action don’t have that much longer to wait.

The footage, the gut-punch at the end of a lack-luster Ubisoft presser, is all game-play, and all alpha.  And man, is it sweet.

Fans of the franchise will no doubt note the throwback to the earlier mission planning options, and the game-play is pure, vicious, and adrenaline-soaked. The environment is – apparently –  completely destructible, and this is used to great effect in the game-play demo – bullets deform walls, shotguns obliterate furniture, and shaped-charges rip holes in walls … and floors. This trailer speaks for itself.

Note the tactical use of defensive items, drones, rappelling gear, and riot shields. It’s unquestionably slick, and incredibly exciting. Most impressive of all, however, is the sheer humanity and excellence of detail on the hostage. I was just blown away – never have I ever had that kind of emotional response to a ‘flag’ in a game.
