Wizards of the Coast has announced a new CCG to be played alongside its popular table-top RPG Dungeons and Dragons. The game — “Shadow Over Nentir Vale” — boasts booster packs that provide cards with in-game bonuses and brief power-ups for your characters in any adventure setting. As an avid player and frequent DM, I’m unsure about this collusion of fantasy game types. The nature of D&D seems to be moving in a unilaterally MMORPG direction. I can understand the post-modern blurring of genre lines (“genres” here being different game systems and types); however, I wonder if it will cause even more distraction and removal from live roleplaying aspects of the game. Regardless, the artistry and mechanics of the CCG are — as expected from WotC — exquisite and intriguing. Read on to see the full press release and rules of the game.
Dungeons & Dragons Fortune Cards to Debut in February 2011
January 31, 2011, Renton, WA–Wizards of the Coast invites Dungeons & Dragons players to power up with D&D Fortune Cards–the newest accessory for the popular D&D roleplaying game.
D&D Fortune Cards give players a fun new way to survive the challenges of any adventure by providing characters in-game benefits and brief power-ups. Specifically designed for use in D&D RPG home games and the D&D Encounters in-store play program, D&D Fortune Cards are themed so that players can build a deck suited to their specific style of play.
Available in 8-card booster packs with differing levels of rarity, D&D Fortune Cards serve as another avenue for excitement around the game table. Whether players collect them all, or just use two or three boosters to build a deck, a player’s tactical options for their character will change and expand in interesting ways.
Dungeons & Dragons Fortune Cards: Shadow Over Nentir Vale is set to release February 8, 2011 and has an MSRP of $3.99.
