I live in Greensboro, North Carolina. There, I teach English (mainly composition and Shakespeare) at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I moonlight as a dungeon master who currently runs two campaigns in the same world. Every weekend, I perform improv comedy at a professional improv club in downtown Greensboro. My top three favorite things are: pie, cats, and sandwiches. If you can somehow combine all three and not hurt the kitties, I’ll be your best friend forever.

Prelude to Millennium: Chapter 1.4 (Vivian Murphy to Thomas Raith)

I decided to include this response from Vivian (Thomas’ contact) before we get to Mycroft and the rest.  This letter pings as Thomas is talking to Mycroft; I’m going to play with time a little bit and see if it pays off narratively.  The next part will take place before this letter arrives and, hopefully it

Prelude to Millennium: Chapter 1.3 (Thomas Raith to Vivian Murphy)

Posting a new section of the RPG on game day itself is always exciting.  Nothing gets me more in the mood to table-top than novelizing a version of what’s already happened.  These guys (and gal) have helped tremendously in this process by being active storytellers themselves when they RP.  You’d think they’re all vets with

Prelude to Millennium, Part I, Chapter 1.2 (Thomas Raith to Vivian Murphy)

Below is the second installment of Chapter 1.  Thomas is an increasingly enjoyable character to write; noir predicates itself on writing an analogy a second, especially in the mind of the detective.  Luckily, Taylor has played the part well during game and given me plenty to work with.  I can’t wait to introduce Mycroft next.  Just imagine

A Long Time Frothing: Writing and Emotional Responsibility for a DM

Brace yourselves.  I’ve got quite a bit to say, and most of it is rambling and smacks of “back in my day, we didn’t have feelings!”  Also: end-notes.  When you see this symbol (*), scroll to the bottom for some addendum that is neither funny nor pertinent. So it’s been a hot minute.  And I only

Legacy of the Drow’s Creator: Interview with RA Salvatore

Last week, I had the immense pleasure and honor to interview one of fantasy literature’s most prolific figures. RA Salvatore — famous for the Drizzt series — is running from coast to coast for the next few weeks to promote his newest book Neverwinter, the second title in the similarly titled trilogy. Before his tour,

$25 micro-PC Possibly Heading Our Way

Computers really are just getting smaller and smaller.  I remember a time when my 9GB Dell tower was all the rage, drawing envious stares form my freshman hall dorm-mates.  From there, the hard drives just kept holding more data with less physical space consumed.  Then came the USB flash drive that was the size of
