Child’s Play panel WonderCon 2019

Are you ready for a return to Child’s Play? If not, you better get ready! Orion Pictures’ reboot of Child’s Play will bring a modernized version of Chucky to the big screen. The Good Guys doll from the original 1988 film is being upgraded to a Buddi doll, which is described as an “Artificial Intelligence human companion.” All seems fine, that is until some sort of unseen evil entity inhabits one of the Buddi dolls manufactured by the Kaslan Corporation, a leading manufacturer of interactive tech products.

The film stars Aubrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman and Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky.

The Child’s Play panel was held this past weekend at WonderCon 2019 at the Anaheim Convention Center. As per usual with panels about upcoming movies, they roll out the cast and filmmakers and really don’t let them say much about the movie itself. So, it’s more about hearing new announcements, seeing a new trailer, or just seeing your favorite stars live.

Aside from seeing a new trailer and hearing from stars Aubrey Plaza and Gabriel Bateman on what it was like to shoot the new movie, it was a pretty basic paint-by-numbers panel. Plaza and Bateman have a wonderful chemistry on stage and I’m sure it will mirror that in the movie itself. They both seem to understand what kind of movie this is, keeping with the vibe of the original without making it a straight remake. But what made this panel special was the announcement of the voice actor to play Chucky: Mark Hamill.

Hamill surprised WonderCon audiences with a short video announcing his turn as the voice for the evil little doll.

“Hello WonderCon, it’s Mark Hamill here and if you’re wondering who’s going to voice Chucky in the new Child’s Play, you’re looking at him,” Hamill announced in the video. “I can’t wait to bring such an iconic character to life and present him in a way you’ve never seen him before. Child’s Play this summer. We’re going to have some fun. And remember, he’s more than just a toy, he’s your best friend.”

I’m sure he’s going to give us something completely different and something we’ve never seen or thought of before for Chucky. Hamill is an amazing actor and will take the role seriously and won’t let us down one bit.

Directed by Lars Klevberg from a script by Tyler Burton Smith, Child’s Play stars Aubrey Plaza, Brian Tyree Henry, Gabriel Bateman, Tim Matheson and Mark Hamill. The film is set to hit theaters June 21.
