Binary System Podcast – Watch Party #18 – The Silence of the Lambs

It’s time yet again to Social Distance the heck out of this epidemic and watch a movie together while still staying in three different states: North Carolina, Florida, and California. Next up for the Tri-State Watch Party, oh man we’ve been waiting for this one (a family favorite, if you can believe it) The Silence of the Lambs.

The Netflix Watch Party app ended up being a little complicated, so we just set a time to hit “play” and then chatted through instant messenger. Click the jump to read some highlights from the conversation.

The Players: Elizabeth, Hannah, Kathryn, Nathan, and the parents (Parents represented here by Marian, because Dad would chisel a message in a stone tablet before typing anything on a phone.)

Hannah
Lambs at 8:30?

Kathryn
Works for me!

Hannah
It’s on Netflix, too

Elizabeth
Ready when yall are!

Nathan
Same here.

Hannah
Yep, all set and a couple seconds ahead because of m@#$ing Netflix autoplay

Tell me when you hit play

Kathryn
Playing!

Elizabeth
Playing

Nathan
Love that they used the same font as Twin Peaks.

Elizabeth
I didn’t know that!

Nathan
Not sure if it’s the exact one, but it’s really close.

Elizabeth
Agreed

Nathan
Roger Corman?!

Elizabeth
I remember watching this whole intro waiting for her to get killed

Nathan
He did give Jonathan Demme his start, so it makes sense.

Hannah
I don’t remember when I first saw this

Kathryn
College for me, saw it twice in a row at the dollar theater

Elizabeth
One of those tiny theaters at App State for us I think

Jinx

Hannah
Best Pick said this was a really happy set, except that a police consultant gave this guy some file with horrible details about a killer and it really fucked with him

Elizabeth
Oohhhhh I’ll bet

Hannah
“Do you spook easily, Starling?” way to plant the creepy seeds

Elizabeth
Imagine what’s in that giant dossier on Hannibal…

Kathryn
Really weird to watch this after watching the whole Hannibal TV series.

Elizabeth
I was just thinking that as soon as they said “chilton”

Kathryn
Twice. No, three times at least.

Hannah
PHIL HEALD

Kathryn
Slimy from the start.

Hannah
Eb Thomas brought him to the Asolo

Kathryn
“He thinks I’m his nemesis.”

Pretty sure he doesn’t

Hannah
Heh, fuckwit

Kathryn
He did THIS to her.

Elizabeth
So brilliant to not show us

Kathryn
Such a great snippet.

Hannah
I just realized I associate the last shot of this movie with the earlier island shots of Jurassic Park. How about THAT for a double-feature

Elizabeth
Ooooooo

Barney, always did like that guy.

Kathryn
“When she’s finished bring her out.” As opposed to what, leaving her in? Never thought about what a stupid comment that was.

Elizabeth
There he is!!

Kathryn
God, so effortlessly menacing.

Hannah
Seriously

Elizabeth
I love the trivia that says his prison outfit was custom tailored to fit him perfectly

Hannah
“I myself cannot”

Elizabeth
I also like that he called her out on that cheesy “view” line.

Kathryn
“I didn’t”. “No, you ate yours.”

I can imagine that’s when he decided she was worth playing with.

Hannah
Good point

Elizabeth
“Getting all the way to the F. B. I.”

Hannah
No wonder they told her not to share personal info. He got all that from her accent

Elizabeth
Whew

Hannah
“I nicked the census man.”

“Now there’s a good boy”

Kathryn
I can’t decide if census workers love or hate Hannibal’s line there.

Elizabeth
Man that whole scene with all the inmates screaming, still gives me chills every time I watch it.

The students all behind that grate in the dark is such a neat, creepy touch

Kathryn
Is that even possible, to swallow your own tongue?

Hannah
This is such a weird point. We don’t know why he would know that she’s even heard of Miggs

Elizabeth
Maybe she gave him a REALLY thorough write up?

Kathryn
First time I watched this I was confused about who they were talking to.

Hannah
Oh, good point

This is part of SO MUCH MORE detail in the book

… not to be that person

Elizabeth
Hee.

Time stamp? Had a hiccup in the wireless here

Kathryn
24:23

Hannah
That laugh haha

Kathryn
I always loved that laugh.

Elizabeth
Yes me too!

Kathryn
Not surprising that this movie made Jodie Foster a megastar, she shows so many subtle changes in mood and expression.

Elizabeth
Yes, and none of them the typical woman-in-a-horror-movie

Hannah
Have you seen that GEICO commercial where the new homeowner discovers all these mannequins posed in his attic, and he’s just like, “…nope”

Elizabeth
hahaha, not yet

I want to be the person that makes the crazy scrapbook/journals for movies SERIOUSLY

Kathryn
Second time I saw this in the theater the woman behind me gave out this hilarious little shriek at the head in a jar.

Nathan

Elizabeth
hahah

Kathryn
Never quite got that hint. “The rest of me” means Hannibal rented the storage  unit?

Elizabeth
I just thought it was the head, the rest of him

“Tucked him away much as I found him” though, could mean he rented it, or Bill did and Hannibal left it where he found it.

Hannah
It all gets really mapped out in the book

Kathryn
“It’s the sort of thing that Miggs would say.” “Not anymore.”

Another fantastic line.

Hannah
It’s cool that they mention all of that but they don’t quite string it all together (probably in the original screenplay but no room for all of it)

Elizabeth
Weird note: rewatching this movie with Patrick and her saying “that doesn’t interest me doctor” and he said “she said that so well I’m sure she’s a lesbian.” I scoffed. And I still don’t want to give him credit for the remark.

Kathryn
Heh.

Even a stopped clock, yadda yadda yadda.

Elizabeth
Heh. Truth.

Hannah
Haha

“Next special lady” smash cut to this…whooooo boy

Nathan
Wonder how many people this movie ruined this song for?

Elizabeth
I’m guessing this movie did good things for Tom Petty? That one song anyway? Not that he needed help but.

Kathryn
This actress was in American Horror Story. I remember a recapper ranting about the fact that she let herself be typecast as “Serial Killer Victim”.

Elizabeth
No way, who was she in AHS?

Kathryn
Psychologist in Asylum.

Hannah
Haha I wonder how many temporarily disabled people this movie ruined their move for

Nathan
True!

She was also in Weeds.

Elizabeth
BUT WHAT OF THE KITTY?

Hannah
Aw, kitty

Elizabeth
Love all the bits of training, neat details all of them

He’s right about Hannibal being able to pick up on an agenda

Hannah
Defensive local law enforcement???? NEVER

Elizabeth
Heh

And she’s right to call him on that crap later. Bad enough to play the “let’s talk away from the little lady” but then to leave her in the room with all the goombahs.

Hannah
Yuuuup

Kathryn
Rock of Ages, excellent choice

Hannah
OH HEY IT’S THAT CREEPY GUY

Elizabeth
Hee

Kathryn
Super creepy

Elizabeth
I was so confused the first time I watched this, I was like “…..is she going into the wrong funeral?”

Hannah
Haha yes, I just thought that for a sec too

Dang HOHH really ripped this off too

Kathryn

“Gowon now.” Still a little surprised that worked.

Elizabeth
Nice Starling, I’d never have had the confidence to order them out.

Lemar, of course, needs no vicks vap o rub.

Kathryn
The tears just behind her voice, so effective.

Hannah
That’s a real actor on the table

Elizabeth
Foley guys did a masterful job in this movie

Oh is it?

Hannah
It is with the mouth shots

I mean, just looking at it

Elizabeth
True

Kathryn
It’s disturbing how I look at the marks and think “Why was he so wasteful?”

Hee, these two.

Hannah
BULLDOG

Elizabeth
Bulldog!

Jinx!

Hannah
Jinx!

Oh man, now we’re inside

Elizabeth
Creeeeeepy

Kathryn
Wonder if Death’s Head moths are invasive. So thoughtless.

Elizabeth
My friend Leland is ENDLESSLY fascinated with Buffalo Bill.

Hannah
It’s the effectively terrifying how they show just how ineffective this all is

… even as we all feel it that much more

Elizabeth
It’s the best thing she could’ve done and it didn’t make a bit of difference.

“Maximum security still applies of course.” The little shrug when she says that

Hannah
… over playing, over playing…

Elizabeth
“Sounds charming.”

He just loves getting aaaaaaaall this pain.

Kathryn
“There’s no correlation between transsexuals and violence.” CAN WE GET THIS ON A BILLBOARD?

Elizabeth
RIGHT?

Nathan

Hannah
This movie still got protested for the association

But I always took that point home

Elizabeth
That makes sense I guess, it’s not a good connection for them

“It rubs the lotion on it’s skin” are there any creepier serial killer lines in all of film?

Kathryn
It places the lotion in the basket has become SUCH a meme.

Hannah
BAD CALL, CHILTON

Elizabeth
That moment he says “Barney.” I hope Barney was safe in all future books and movies?

Kathryn
I remember the book made the lock pick a lot more complicated.

And that the pieces for it were collected ONLY at times that Barney wasn’t on call.

Hannah
Oh Elizabeth…

Elizabeth
Oh NO

Nathan
There’s Roger Corman.

Kathryn
Didn’t the book make it clear that Hannibal actually sent a thank-you note to Barney?

Hannah
Iconic mask. No spit guard too

Elizabeth
And that AWFUL Jack Crawford..

Hannah
This is more anagram play

Louis Friend

Elizabeth
And….DONE things with the skin…

Kathryn
“Tell me Mom…”

Hannah
Yoiiiikes

Elizabeth
“Take this thing back to Baltimore…”

I think of that line EVERY time I see that actress.

She played Greg House’s mom!

Kathryn
“MY name is…”

Hannah
OH

I always thought it was way too on the nose to make House’s dad R. Lee Ermy

Kathryn
You can see why this went so bad, they’re not nearly careful enough.

Elizabeth
I figured they weren’t careful because they didn’t care if someone killed him, they didn’t think he’d actually escape?

Kathryn
The book also made it clear that they thought Barney’s instructions for him were ridiculous overkill.

Elizabeth
Oh I bet.

Kathryn
“Yeah. That was good.”

Elizabeth
“People will say we’re in love.” Oh they do, Hannibal, never underestimate the shippers.

Hannah
Heh

I love Julianne Moore but trying to cast her as Starling only emphasizes how much warmer Jodie Foster is

Kathryn
This scene is right up there with my favorite movie scenes of all time.

Elizabeth
Oh AGREED

To BOTH those comments

Keeping his head still while his body moves, so snakelike.

God it’s so brilliantly shot.

Kathryn
The wind noise in the background

Elizabeth
And no soundtrack at all.

Nathan
He never blinks!

Elizabeth
Maaaaaaaan

Kathryn
First time I saw this I thought he was saying Chilton was the killer

Hannah
Yeah that’s a disarming transition

On purpose I’m sure

Elizabeth
I LOVE that finger brush I DON’T CARE

Kathryn
That one tiny touch says SO much.

Nathan
BAD TOUCH!

Kathryn
AND HERE WE GO.

Elizabeth
They used this song in Hannibal too, not quite as effectively as here of course but..

Hannah
Now we get Hannibal’s mini-movie

Elizabeth
I never thought of it that way but you’re totally right!

Mind the drawings, please.

Kathryn
Bon appetit, never noticed that

Hannah
Properly terrifying

Elizabeth
Man my face is numb.

I want Hannibal’s rug. Just to freak people out.

Hannah
Now where did I put my nightstick…

Elizabeth
Heh

The total terror of everybody just sells this scene.

The main cop’s voice is perfect for all of this.

Hannah
TAKE YOUR FINGERS OFF THE TRIGGERS THAT’S NOT HOW YOU DO THIS

Elizabeth
hahahah

Kathryn
With Hannibal around it’s a little more understandable, I’d be emptying my clip at everything.

Hannah
Fair enough, except when you’re in a stairwell with your coworkers…

Elizabeth
“You look real good” THAT line got a horrified laugh from the audience.

Nathan
Chris Isaak is the SWAT team captain.

Elizabeth
Oh no way!

Hannah
OH

I remember knowing that a quarter century ago

Elizabeth
The “seizure” to prevent any drugs…

I mean the METICULOUS plotting to pull this off

“One in the leg.” NICE shooting.

Kathryn
Damn, still an absolutely flawless scene.

Hannah
That is LOL horrifying. I don’t know how else to respond

Elizabeth
GOOSEBUMPS EVERYWHERE

Hannah
Aaaaaand now back to plot numero uno

Kathryn
Always thought the movie got a touch bogged down with these next few scenes.

Elizabeth
Tell Mom Belvedere is over three hours from Toledo, no worries.

Kathryn
Probably deliberate, to set the audience up for the climax

Hannah
Heh, she already said it was closer to W. Virginia

Yes, I think they’re giving us a chance to invest considering how much they cross us up later

Elizabeth
Any time I see an Ohio location I’m like “HOW CLOSE TO TOLEDO”

Hannah
Heh apparently it’s very close to OU

Music Boxes: Never Not Creepy

Elizabeth
RIGHT?

Kathryn
Those marionettes, damn.

Elizabeth
She had a cat too WHY WITH THE CATS

Hannah
Hollywood got some mouthy-ass cats

Elizabeth
“I’m a cat I’m a cat pay attention this is important”

Can’t see darts in dress patterns without thinking of this movie

Hannah
Yes!

Everything that explains this confusion is in the book

Elizabeth
Listened to the book on tape in 2002 I think, time for a re-read.

(On the drive through the Arizona desert in the middle of the night NOT THE BEST PLAN MAYBE)

Hannah
I love that they include all of her agency

Elizabeth
YES

The pin I got for Leland’s birthday a couple years ago:

Nathan
That is creepy and hilarious at the same time.

Elizabeth
YES

Kathryn
That ending shot made me SO CONFUSED when I first saw it.

Elizabeth
SAME HERE

Hannah
I WANT A PRESCRIPTION ICE CREAM BAR

Elizabeth
hahahah

Hannah
Oooooh noooo

Elizabeth
bugs bugs bugs bugs

Hannah
Tom on Best Pick has a slight issue with this misdirection, but I love it

Elizabeth
GO CATHERINE

Kathryn
DON’T YOU MAKE ME HURT YOUR DOG

Elizabeth
I love the misdirection too, another thing that puzzled the crap out of me for at least a minute

Do you think he planned to kill her the second he let her in the house?

Hannah
I wanted to think he was just being really practiced at being compliant and not suspicious

Elizabeth
“The police around here don’t seem to have the first clue…”

Love the shucking off of the coat, good girl

Hannah
I NEVER NOTICED MOST OF THE WOMAN SUIT BEFORE

Elizabeth
AAAAA

Kathryn
“YOU’RE SAFE.” BIG laugh in the theater at that one.

Elizabeth
“You’re safe!” ANOTHER laugh from the audience

Kathryn
Jinx

Elizabeth
hahah

Hannah
HONEY GET A HAIR TIE

Elizabeth
hahahah

My palms are sweating

Kathryn
Omigod omigod omigod omigod…

Hannah

Elizabeth
HIS HAND

THAT SHE RELOADED TOO

Kathryn
HELL YEAH

Elizabeth

I was hyperventilating the whole time

I remember being impressed with that cake, I know that’s silly, but it looks very spiffy

Kathryn
Never really sure what they were saying with the close up of the handshake

Elizabeth
Teasing us with an idea just to throw us off?

Hannah
No room to criticize puns with that line, Hanny

Kathryn
And in the background someone shouts “Dodson, we’ve got Dodson here!”

Elizabeth
Hee

Nathan

Elizabeth
Ending it that way was so brilliant, I loved it the first time I saw it and I still love it.

Kathryn
Man oh man. I could watch that movie every year.

Elizabeth
YES!

Been a couple years for me, never EVER gets old.

Kathryn
I tried to find out if someone was selling a reproduction of that rug, but all I could find was this thing:

Nathan
WHO WOULD WANT THAT IN THEIR HOUSE?!?!?!

Elizabeth
NOT ME. But the fact that they included the rug means they were paying attention, bravo.

Marian
Oh my. Think that is my 3rd time. Did not get up from my seat nor fell asleep once!

Elizabeth
Hahahaha!

What’s the score Flixwatcher uses to rate how much you pay attention?

Hannah
I think I’ve spent years resisting a rewatch based solely on the opening graphics. Fail

Elizabeth
Hee. Once every three years at least for me.

Engagement score, that’s it. I can’t stop watching this one as soon as it’s on.
