It’s time yet again to Social Distance the heck out of this epidemic and watch a movie together while still staying in three different states: North Carolina, Florida, and California. Next up this week, Lars and the Real Girl.
The Netflix Watch Party app ended up being a little complicated, so we just set a time to hit “play” and then chatted through instant messenger. Click the jump to read some highlights from the conversation.
The Players: Elizabeth, Hannah, Kathryn, Nathan, and the parents (Parents represented here by Marian, because Dad would chisel a message in a stone tablet before typing anything on a phone.)
Hannah
Can I executively decide that we watch Lars and the Real Girl at 8:30?
Elizabeth
Seconded!
(Not that an executive section needs approval, but you have it anyway
*executive decision
Kathryn
I’ll concur with the executive section (Hannah) that we watch Lars tonight.
Hannah
I’ve already had tomato soup and grilled cheese, plus the cherry kool aid, today. Apparently I am in a comfort mode
(Comfort=Ryan Gosling in holiday turtlenecks)
Kathryn
Six minute warning!
Elizabeth
Got it rented and queued up!
Hannah
There’s a pg 13 and an R, what did you guys go with?
Nathan
Not sure.
Kathryn
Ahhhh.
Elizabeth
OH, didn’t see, I got the R
Kathryn
We got R
Nathan
I doubt there’s that much difference.
Kathryn
Ready to play?
Hannah
I just got R (I can’t for the life of me remember what would make this R)
Yep!
Elizabeth
Ready!
Kathryn
Playing!
Elizabeth
Playing!
Kathryn
Been a while since we watched this.
Hannah
So we all know that this was written by a friend of Mom and Dad’s, right?
Nathan
Really?
Elizabeth
Yep!
Kathryn
I don’t think I knew that!
Hannah
Nancy Oliver. She and the guy who did American Beauty and Six Feet Under were writing partners at the Asolo
Kathryn
I had no idea Nancy Oliver wrote this!
Hannah
Yes! She’s my FB friend. We’re TIGHT
Elizabeth
“My grandson’s gay I know all about the gays.” Aww.
Kathryn
Yeeting that flower
Hannah
Hee
Omg I can’t imagine having different shoes to wear in the office
Nathan
Or having an office mate like that guy.
Kathryn
Having a tough time remembering a commute.
Hannah
No kidding
Heh
Kathryn
I know this lady is being caring but I am NOT OKAY with that tackle.
Elizabeth
I was thinking the same thing! Trying to give her the benefit of the doubt and all but…
Kathryn
So weird seeing Ryan in this after seeing him in Blade Runner.
Elizabeth
Totally different role than anything I’ve seen him do before.
Man a converted garage in that weather, that’s gotta be COLD.
Kathryn
Heeeere we go…
“She’s shy.” Pause “Well you ARE.”
Hannah
Eeeee
Elizabeth
“Karen KAREN SHE’S NOT GONNA EAT”
Kathryn
Hee.
Damn autoplayer.
Elizabeth
Hee
Kathryn
That website looks like it would be FILLED with viruses
Nathan
And about 10 billion pop-up ads.
Hannah
What do we know Patricia Clarkson from?
Nathan
House of Cards?
Elizabeth
Oh no, she played “Jane” in House of Cards, totally useless character bleh
Kathryn
She played that guru-like character in House of Cards who served NO FUCKING PURPOSE.
Elizabeth
Jinx!
Kathryn
Heh.
We obviously have opinions about her character.
Elizabeth
Character on Parks and Rec?
Hannah
Heh, that’s not what I know her from, but she’s so familiar
Nathan
She was also in Six Feet Under.
Hannah
I wanted to say she was on Frasier, but I didn’t see that on her imdb
Oh that might be it
Nathan
She was in Fraser. Played Clare French in a few episodes.
Hannah
OH
Kathryn
I’m probably remembering her from a Law and Order episode.
Hannah
That’s it!
Another girlfriend frasier got neurotic over
Nathan
Did he have any other kind?
Elizabeth
Aww, watching her face fall when he says girlfriend.
Hannah
Aw indeed
Kathryn
Your cousin puts dresses on his cats.
Hannah
Hahaha
Elizabeth
Do we know what kind of church it is? All the hymns sound familiar.
Kathryn
I’m guessing Methodist?
Elizabeth
Grabbing the kid “get BACK here..”
He really does a good job of “answering” her when she “talks.”
Hannah
Heh kind of reminded me of Timothy what’s his name from HoHH
Heh ask.com
Elizabeth
Wow, I see why they tapped him for La La Land
Kathryn
Well pick her up before she drowns, jeez.
Nathan
Lead actress reminds me a lot of Jodie Whittaker.
Hannah
I want to say she’s British but she’s another one I can’t place
Elizabeth
I love how they couldn’t get him to talk before and now he can’t STOP talking.
Hannah
Omg the head shake against hugs
Kathryn
This is just so convincing and heartbreaking
Elizabeth
“And this must be Bianca.” Aw, she’s so nice.
“She doesn’t drink.” My heart!
“So I hear you’re getting married” “Yes” “No”
Nicely done
Kathryn
Heh, excellent strategy
Hannah
LOLed
Kathryn
It’s really impressive how he tunes out anything that doesn’t fit the narrative he has going on in his head.
Elizabeth
It’d be a great strategy with douchebag comments in any situation.
Hannah
We didn’t get intimate moments with him early on. It was all other people’s POV
Elizabeth
And so well communicated that way.
Here’s me not paying attention and didn’t realize till now that’s why he’s scared about the baby.
Hannah
I don’t think they made it explicit until then
Kathryn
I thought he just wasn’t wild about sister in law, or maybe a little envious of his brother.
Elizabeth
“Think about all the bald children.” Awww.
Kathryn
“They never fight.”
Elizabeth
Was JUST typing that.
Kathryn
What is the phrase, follie a deux? This is a very sweet follie a entire town.
Elizabeth
The way her voice squeaks breaks my heart. In a good way.
“Did I miss something?”
That little head tilt. “Thaaaat’s right.”
Kathryn
Poor guy got turned down by his own doll.
Elizabeth
I mean the complicated architecture in your own head to make that happen.
I always wanted to do that grass blade whistle.
Hannah
That load of laundry is all towels. No urgency there
Elizabeth
I love loads of towels. I could fold towels for hours.
Nathan
You should come work at the vet hospital with me. I spend more time folding towels than petting the dogs.
Elizabeth
We washed a ton of towels at the shelter too, though most of them were beat all to hell
I’ve done a complete 180 on his brother by the way
Hannah
The plot of this movie is just a complete 180
Kathryn
This office guy is the worst kind of prankster, can’t abide anyone pranking HIM.
Elizabeth
Oh my god the CPR ON THE BEAR
Kathryn
MY HEART.
Nathan
According to the trivia, he adlibbed that.
Elizabeth
Brilliant.
Hannah
Pink balls are never 14lbs
Elizabeth
Hee
Kathryn
As bad as I’ve flubbed it at bowling I’ve at least never yeeted the ball into another lane.
Elizabeth
I’ve gotten preeeetty close to doing that
Kathryn
I swear, when the dudebros showed up I thought this was going to be a completely different scene.
Nathan
I threw the ball behind me once.
Elizabeth
We always asked Dad why we never went bowling to the place just down the street, he said we couldn’t because the last time he and Mom went bowling she threw the ball overhand and knocked down the whole alley.
Direct quote.
Hannah
Haha I remember that
This movie is so much about how you prep for cynicism and people are actually lovely
Elizabeth
Very
Kathryn
Such a wonderful mix of emotions here.
“Bianca’s unconscious!”
Elizabeth
“911?” “WELL I DON’T KNOW”
Kathryn
It warms my heart how everyone in this movie plays along.
Elizabeth
Like, throwing looks at each other but not eye-rolling
All the flowers.
Kathryn
I’ll keep saying it, MY HEART.
Elizabeth
“Is there something I should be doing right now” “No dear. You eat.”
Hannah
We brought casseroles
Kathryn
“This is no ordinary funeral.”
You said it, brother.
Elizabeth
“She was a lesson in courage.”
Kathryn
I know it’s all very sweet but that casket is going to give someone way down the road one HELL of a surprise.
Elizabeth
hahaha
Hannah
Haha
Elizabeth
I know i keep saying it but, awwww.
Kathryn
“I suppose we should catch up with everyone. ” So many double meanings here.
Hannah
Lovely
Elizabeth
Beautiful music too
Kathryn
Now I wanna rewatch Gosling in Blade Runner again.
Elizabeth
Hee, SAME
Kathryn
Ryan by the way does NOT seem to be aging AT ALL.
Hannah
This music sounds too close to the Office theme imo
Elizabeth
I never watched the Office so I totally missed that
Marian
Lovely. 3rd time seeing it. It hasn’t gotten old.
Elizabeth
Can’t believe I waited this long to see it the first time.
Hannah
Only time I met Nancy was at a magazine Christmas party. Kay Kipling (longtime arts editor) introduced us
Elizabeth
Going by what she’s written, I bet she’s lovely.
Hannah
But she has made lovely comments on my FB posts, which is almost like being nominated for an Oscar
Elizabeth
I’ll say!
Marian
And she is lovely. She worked as a lighting assistant with Marty Petlock. He required his assistants to keep a log. Hers were pretty special. I am going to contact Marty and see if he has any of them
Elizabeth
I’d love to read that
