I went to the movie without any prior knowledge of any written version or movie versions of this. I will be honest, I went because of Scarlett Johannsson. I did see the movie in 3D/IMAX, but I am not sure that I would spend the extra money to see it in that format if I were you.

The futuristic world portrayed in GitS is a pretty magnificent display of great computer graphics. The plot is a simple one so they had to try to make up for it in other ways. The metamorphosis of Major (played by Johannson) from the brain of a dead girl into the enhanced robot person shell was done really well. Of course, we get to see ScarJo’s ass and boobs when she is in that suit because it is so skin tight. I know she is hot, but I am not sure anybody’s ass is that perfect.
The pursuit of the “bad guy” gives us a chance to meet her coworkers, so to speak. Batou, played by Pilou Asbæk, was my favorite character in the entire movie. He has a very dry sense of humor that works well against Major’s non-existent depth of character. She is not human after all. We shouldn’t expect much.
As the story unfolds I was confused in parts. It left me wondering if die-hard fans of GitS were confused too or if it made sense to them. The last few minutes of the movie explained a lot of things including that the “bad guy” we thought was the baddie, is not the bad guy after all. All throughout the movie there are lots of elements that are a cry to tell us that we are self absorbed, money hungry, materialistic weirdos. I can’t argue with any of that. I love the fact that the cars that they drive around and have been beat to shit are Lamborghinis. Things are just taken for granted. I would love to hear from a huge fan of the Anime to see what you thought about the movie.
I am glad I saw the movie, but I wouldn’t see it again in the theater and it pains me to say that. I really wanted it to be better than it was. There were doggies in a few scenes so that was great, but that was canceled out by the scary as fuck robot Geisha girls. How can they make something so beautiful so terrifying?
