Minecraft Adding Wolves, Achievements and Stats System

A few days ago, Minecraft creator Markus Persson aka “Notch” announced on his blog some upcoming updates to the PC/Mac game sweeping the world by storm.

The update you will probably see sooner than later, as noted by Persson, would be the inclusion of wolves as a mob unit.  These new creatures are adorable and their ultimate goal, if you so choose, would be to tame them and utilize them as helpful companions.  Writes Persson, “You can tame it and order it to follow you around, and it’ll work as a pet. They’re fairly rare, but they won’t despawn once you’ve tamed them.”

Persson has also released a small video showing the wolves in action as your pets.

In addition to the new mob unit, Persson also states he is working on developing a stats and achievement system.  For those of you who appreciate the openness and non-goal-oriented aspects of Minecraft, rest assured.  “Achievements will NOT be chores like ‘cut down 10,000 trees’, but rather challenges like ‘ride a pig off a cliff’,” writes Persson.

Statistics for your gameplay will also be recorded, such as how many trees you have cut down and other little tidbits of information.  Persson states that his goal for the stats and achievement system will be to allow everyone in the Minecraft community to see each other’s stats and achievements through their profile page on minecraft.net, “in case you want to brag,” he says.
