SDCC 2012 – IDW and Hasbro Announce My Little Pony Comics

Brony comic fans, rejoice!  Hasbro and IDW Publishing have announced that they will be releasing a set of brand new adventures for the residents of Ponyville.

The comics, which will start being released November of this year, will be written by Katie Cook and drawn by Andy Price.  You might recongize both of those names, Cook is the author of the webcomic Gronk and Price has worked on DC Legacy and Batman Archives.  Both are fans of the animated series, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

According to the press release by Hasbro and IDW, “fans of the animated series will be excited to hear that the comics will stay true to its moral foundation, while providing themes and subject matter that older audiences can also appreciate.”  The comics will follow brand new story lines and lessons on friendship.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is an animated show featured on the Hasbro and Discovery-owned channel, “The Hub” and premiered in October of 2010.  The show itself follows six female pony protagonists as they learn important lessons about friendship and growing up.  This current iteration of the My Little Pony franchise was conceptualized by Lauren Faust, animator and writer for The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.

Since the time the show was released, it has gathered a large following of young adults who enjoy the show.  It has gained public attention though the fact that many of its young adult fans are men, who refer to themselves as “bronies.”  The writers, animators, voice actors and even Hasbro have embraced the brony community, and this latest announcement is a sure sign they want to give fans the opportunity to enjoy more of the series.
