Final Smash Bros Direct Goes Out With a Bang

December 15th 2015 marked the very last Nintendo Smash Bros Direct, and although it didn’t give everyone exactly what they wanted, it still managed to take everyone by surprise. The biggest news, of course, was the inclusion of three brand new characters to the Smash Bros family. One character we already knew about, the other two, not so much. Check out the full Nintendo Direct below, and hit the jump to read the highlights from it!

June 2015’s Smash Bros Nintendo Direct Does Not Disappoint

On the morning of June 14th 2015, Nintendo dropped a Direct that focused solely on Smash Bros for WiiU and 3DS.  In it, series creator Masahiro Sakurai confirmed rumors about the addition of not just one character, but three additional characters. Not only that, he also confirmed additional stages and Mii fighter costumes. A whole lot of information was dropped so I’m going to take the time to detail everything you need to know. Top 5 Choices for Super Smash Bros. Characters

On April first, Nintendo Announced through their Nintendo Direct that two new characters would be coming to Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U: Mewtwo, of whom we were already aware of and expecting, and the surprise announcement that Lucas would finally be joining the fight this summer as well! Nintendo has been increasingly listening to its fans, and after the Direct the company put up a ballot submission on their Smash Bros. microsite, so you could submit your own character ideas, with the idea that the top voted character would join Super Smash Bros.

Nintendo bringing the Holiday Fun

Nintendo bringing the Holiday Fun

With the next-gen console war in full swing and the PS4 in first place, the biggest question is: who’s going to be number 2? Before E3 2014, it was assumed that Xbox One might have a trick up their sleeve to either knock the PS4 off it’s perch or something to solidify 2nd place.

While Nintendo certainly brought their A Game to E3, they took it a step further with this year’s holiday release list and some surprises which truly make me want to pick up a Wii U.

Top 5 Wii Exclusives

Nintendo‘s Wii console took the market by storm when it first debuted in 2006. What many gamers dismissed as not having the hardware to compete in today’s HD market has instead become the most successful system of this generation. Of course you need games for your popular system. So here are my top 5 Wii Exclusives. No, Wii Sports is not on the list. Sorry.
5)Super Smash Brothers Brawl

Poor Luigi. Even in the group photo he is stuck in the background

Super Smash Brothers Brawl is an amazing game.  The controls are easy to get the hang of, the action is chaotic, and you can’t find a better cast of characters anywhere. Endless nights of “Hey man, you wanna Smash?”. Who would have thought they could create such an addictive fighter based off of such a cuddly character base. Well I guess Bowser isn’t very cuddly. But I bet under that shell is just a big teddy bear of a heart, crying out for love.

Top 5 Mario Spinoffs

Mario is not only one of the most recognizable characters in video games, but in all of media. The poster boy of Nintendo has seen his fair share of spin off games, both good and bad. When you are an icon you are bound to have some things that cash in on your image alone. However, there are occasions where your spin off projects are just as awesome as the real thing, anyone remember Micheal Jackson’s Captain Eo at Disney?

Smash Bros. Cosplay

Check out photographer Greg De Setfano‘s awesome gallery of Smash Bros. cosplay.  Like any great cosplay, each costume looks really close to the character they are playing as.  But I’ve never seen Sonic in a wheelchair.  When did he get hurt? I hope he’s going to be ok because if he’s really hurt, I’d feel bad. Poor Sonic.

Also, you’ll might recognize some of the cosplayers from the web series, There Will Be Brawl.

Super Smash Bros. 64 Released on Wii Virtual Console

smash64

The day has arrived, my friends! Today, Nintendo has released the N64 classic, Super Smash Bros. 64 for the Wii Virtual Console. The game itself is a classic, having spawned two sequels for the GameCube and Wii itself. However, the old school game is always fun and, personally, Super Smash Bros. Brawl didn’t live up to the hype, at least for me.

If there’s one thing I love about the current era of gaming, it’s the ability for gaming companies to rerelease their games digitally. On the PS3/PSP side, Square Enix recently released Final Fantasy VII on the PlayStation Network, with talks of Konami releasing the original Metal Gear Solid. Both PSN and Xbox LIVE Arcade have Castlevania Symphony of the Night, along with many other classic games.

Some may like the amazing graphics (or, the Wii’s case, passable graphics) that the current generation of consoles is capable of, but I think the fact that they’re keeping the classics alive is what keeps my interest as a gamer.

[Update] Silly me. Apparently, the Friday release was for PAL regions. Sorry to our North American readers who got their hopes up. Looks like you’ll have to wait.
