Elantris is a Magical Journey

Last week I talked about Brandon Sanderson’s awesome book Warbreaker.   This week I address another stand alone novel by Sanderson: Elantris.  Elantris was his debut onto the science-fiction novel scene and it is a great opening novel.  The story is superbly written and has a wonderful plot that deals with religion, political subterfuge, and of course, magic.  So come along on a journey with me into the world of Elantris.  I promise that the ride will not disappoint.

Warbreaker Will Take Your Breath Away

Warbreaker is a stand alone fantasy novel by Brandon Sanderson, who you may know as the author finishing The Wheel of Time series started by Robert Jordan.  That is where I first saw Sanderson’s work, and I immediately fell in love with his writing.  I started devouring his books, from his first fantasy novel, Elantris, to his Mistborn trilogy.

The reason I want to talk about Warbreaker first is simple – it’s absolutely phenomenal.  He wove a wonderful tapestry of character growth, intrigue, and action all in a world with a dynamic and new magic system.  It is a great read.

Star Wars – Best/Worst

Star Wars – Best/Worst

Every series – whether  a book trilogy, TV show, etc. – has moments in it that people find amazing or fantastic, not to mention quotable.  They are the defining moments of that series, the ones that you remember no matter how long it has been since you’ve watched or read that story.

Unfortunately, lots of series also have “facepalm” moments too.  Moments that make you want to go up to the writer or director and smack them…hard.  These moments are also those that stick with you, no matter how hard you may try and forget them.  Like the good moments, these are hard to forget.

Star Wars is full of these moments and, as a series, has inspired and disappointed its fans with some of its choices.  Let’s take a look at some of the series’ more defining moments, for better or worse.

Twelve – Russia has a vampire problem

Twelve – Russia has a vampire problem

I love vampire fiction.  I am enchanted by the mythos that invariably surrounds these denizens of the night, and, in my opinion, the best part about the mythos is that it changes from author to author.  Vampires are intrinsically different in each story, but still retain certain distinguishing features.

Jasper Kent’s fantastic vampire novel Twelve certainly pulls from traditional vampire lore while imposing some interesting features on the archetypal model we are used to.  Just a warning: these aren’t the angst-ridden, gorgeous, sparkly vampires that have been in the media lately.

These guys are mean… and hungry.

Take a Bite Out of Feed!

Take a Bite Out of Feed!

Everyone loves a good zombie story; it’s basically human nature.  It seems that there is some type of subconscious desire to experience and understand what happens when humanity loses itself and becomes animalistic and base.  Coinciding with this is the desire to see people overcome their baseness, their personal zombies.   But what happens when zombies aren’t the biggest problem?  In  the novel Feed, author Mira Grant takes a graphic and hard look at life after a zombie apocalypse, where zombies are merely a part of the background and not the focal point of the story.

I Love Chains as Much as the Next Guy But…

Can I have everyone’s attention please?  Turn off your TV, mute your iTunes, stop playing WoW, and just read this for a minute.  Do I have everyone’s undivided attention?

Good.

Now that I do, I have a message for you; by “you” I specifically mean women who like to cosplay.  Ready?  Here it is.

There are other costume options for you to dress up as other than slave Leia!

There I said it.  Geez, that’s a load off my chest, and just to assuage your fears it isn’t just me who thinks this way.

Pixelated Fashion Week!

During Japan’s Fashion Week, designer Kunihiko Morinaga debuted his 8-Bit re-imagining of women’s clothing from his line “anrealage.”  His fashion line for the fall and winter 2011/2012 season encompasses quite the range of women’s clothing: everything from professional attire and dresses to sweatshirts and athletic-wear.  These contain the same pixelated feel to them, and, from far away, appear normal.  A close-up view makes them appear distorted and, well, pixelated.  The video footage from the show is fascinating; check it out below!

Grinning Gamer opens; geeks rejoice!

Last Friday, April 1st, Huneycutt and I had the pleasure of attending the opening of the Grinning Gamer in Greensboro, North Carolina.

We got to take a look around at some of the awesome merchandise they were selling and chat with Brian, the owner. We spent a lot of time ogling all of the wonderful rule books (and of course buying some), table-top games, some awesome dice sets, and card games the store has to offer.
